Committee Member
The Troop Committee, led by the Committee Chair, handles the troop's "back of house": finances, record-keeping, recruiting, logistics, and the other work that keeps the program running, so the Scoutmaster Corps and the scouts can focus on the program itself.
Most committee members also hold a specific role, such as Treasurer or Advancement Coordinator. Those roles are described on their own pages, and build on this one.

The Committee’s Role
Section titled “The Committee’s Role”The committee supports the program; it doesn’t run it. The scouts plan and lead the troop, coached by the Scoutmaster Corps. The committee’s job is to make sure they have what they need to do that: money, gear, records, transportation, trained adults, and a place to meet.
Read the Assistant Scoutmaster page’s section on the Game of Scouting. Committee members don’t coach scouts day to day, but every decision the committee makes should serve a youth-led troop.
Committee Meetings
Section titled “Committee Meetings”The committee meets monthly at the VFW to review program plans, finances, advancement, membership, and upcoming events. Come prepared with an update from your area, and send any agenda items to the Committee Secretary ahead of time. If you can’t attend, send your update ahead of time instead.
Other parents are welcome to sit in.
Boards of Review
Section titled “Boards of Review”For every rank except Scout, a scout’s last step is a Board of Review with 3-6 committee members. It isn’t a re-test of requirements, and it’s not something a scout can fail. It’s a conversation about the scout’s progress, what they’ve learned, and how they’re enjoying the program, and a chance for the committee to see how the troop is doing from the scout’s point of view.
Specific Roles
Section titled “Specific Roles”Most committee members take on one of these roles in addition to this one:
- Activities Coordinator
- Advancement Coordinator
- Committee Secretary
- Medical Records Coordinator
- Membership Coordinator
- Training Coordinator
- Treasurer
- Tree Pickup Coordinator
