Handbook and Uniform

Every scout needs their own copy of the Scout Handbook (purchase here: boys, girls). Get one and bring it with you to every scout event, and keep a pen inside. It’s suggested that you get a protective Handbook Cover for it.

In scouting, there are licenses for carrying and using knives/saws/axes (the Totin’ Chip) and for carrying and using fire-starting tools (the Firem’n Chit). Keep these in your handbook once you’ve earned them, and don’t bring a knife, axe, lighter, matches, etc. until you’ve done so.

The Scout Uniform is the standard uniform for all Scouts and Scouters. There are two uniform levels: Class A and Class B. Every event on the troop calendar will specify which uniform is needed.

Scout Uniform Class A

The Class A uniform is for formal dress. It’s worn at all troop meetings.

Comprised of:

  • Official tan scout shirt (purchase or hand-me-down)
  • Official green scout pants/shorts/skirt (purchase or hand-me-down)
  • Any belt (purchase or hand-me-down)
  • Neckerchief (provided)
  • Patches (provided)

Some uniform parts and accessories are available for free through the Troop Uniform Exchange. Ask the Troop Quartermaster to show you what’s available.

You can find more information about the uniform in your Scout Handbook, or ask your Patrol Leader. There are also uniform inspection sheets for both scouts and adults. For the complete details about the placement of every patch, see the Guide to Awards and Insignia.

Class B is the unofficial uniform for casual dress, such as outings and service projects.

Comprised of:

  • Troop 1607 t-shirt or other scouting-related t-shirt (you get one free on joining, more available for purchase at the Troop Merch Shop)
  • Official green scout pants/shorts/skirt (purchase or hand-me-down)
