Editing this Handbook
Scope and Style
Section titled “Scope and Style”- This site should not attempt to take the place of resources like the Scout Handbook, Troop Leader Guidebook, etc, by teaching skills or information that are adequately explained there.
- It should not duplicate primary sources of information about requirements, policies, etc, but instead provide a minimal summary of the key, unchanging information that everyone needs to know.
- It should frequently and preferentially link to external / official resources instead of re-stating their content.
- All of the information contained should be either a basic summary of Scouting and its structure, or information that is specific to Troop 1607.
- This site shall not be used as a troop “policy document”, “troop bylaws”, or a list of rules and regulations. It is a reference guide, used for training and for the continuity of knowledge.
- Writing should be clear, concise, and expository.
- It should in all circumstances be kept lean and non-exhaustive, in the interest of maintainability, organization, and consumability.
Particulars for the “Handbook” Section
Section titled “Particulars for the “Handbook” Section”The scope of the main “Handbook” section is to provide an introductory explanation of how being a member of Troop 1607 works.
- Avoid excessive jargon and acronyms.
- It should be short and beginner-friendly, with the expectation that some readers will be brand new to Scouting and the troop. Only in the Appendix section should advanced and in-depth topics be covered.
- It is created with the goal that the reader will consume it cover-to-cover initially, but may also skip around or reference individual pages as needed.
